March 1!

Well, it is Saturday March 1!  Twenty or so days until the official start of spring, although one would never know it, this morning is was 2 degrees, I don't even want to think about the windchill. The broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage I planted last week are doing great!  I can't believe how quickly they are growing. Six weeks until my target date of opening, they should be in  prime shape for selling and planting.

My one big holdup is the delivery of hanging baskets I bought.  I ordered them over a week ago, they shipped a week ago and nothing yet.  I wish they'd get here as my nasturtiums and herbs for edible hanging baskets are getting restless. I was going to order more from this particular seller but I don't think so if it takes this long.  Makes me appreciate Amazon Prime that much more.

On the agenda today, planting more brussel sprouts, some various flowers, and transplanting some herbs. Six weeks seems a long time but it really isn't in the plant world.  I want all of these little guys ready to sell and transplant by April 16.

Onward and Upward, have a great Saturday!

Beginning a business

Well, here we go!  This blog will be devoted to whatever I write about.  I write articles sometimes for a history website and now I am venturing into the home gardening business.  So I suppose this first post will be devoted to that venture.

At this stage of my life one realizes that either you go for a dream or you give them up entirely.  I have come to the conclusion that going for the brass ring(ugh... cliche)is worth trying.  To that end, I have started 'Mrs. Kelley's Bedding Plants and Produce'.  I have always had gardens, whether they be flowerbeds or vegetables.  As the years have gone by, naturally my family size has diminished and I find myself with a huge surplus of produce.  The result is I end up with a huge glut that I either give away, freeze or otherwise preserve but some just gets wasted.

A farm type stand was the goal last year, however I severely underestimated just how much I would need to grow in order to sell and make some bit of profit.  It was a learning experience, this year I have a clearer idea of how to go about it. My first step has been starting my flats of seeds.  I have started so many broccoli seeds that I either have to sell or wind up with one giant garden of broccoli.  But I suppose that would be a win-win situation as I could sell the broccoli.

Every morning when I trot downstairs I head for my mini greenhouse and greet the little plants, sounds crazy but I really think they respond positively.  They have been growing their little green hears out :)

I know this blog is a little rough but hey, baby steps.

Above image of nasturtiums for edible hanging baskets.  What a versatile plant nasturtiums are, I had no idea.  And they have a flavor as well, from the leaves, flowers, even the seed pods that form can be used as capers.

Baby germinated broccoli.  These only took two days before sprouting up, I am simply in amazement at how quickly broccoli germinates.  Baby cabbage and cauliflower aren't far behind.

Well, I'd better get busy, lots to do today.  Thanks for stopping by and hope you swing by again.
